Who I Am
My name is Mehul Chinkaria, and I’m a Montreal Graphic Design student at John Abbott College. I enjoy taking simple ideas and turning them into something visual.
I’m still figuring out what kind of designer I want to be, so I like experimenting with different styles and approaches. Sometimes an idea works right away, and other times it takes a few changes. I enjoy that part of the process because I get to see how a project develops from a rough idea into a finished design.
For me, design is about experimenting, learning, and finding what works.
What I Study
I’m currently studying Graphic & Web Design at John Abbott College. The program has allowed me to try a lot of different areas instead of only focusing on one type of design. So far, I’ve worked on typography, branding, photography, digital imaging, web design, page layout, and other design projects.
One thing I’ve learned is that there is more to design than just making something look nice. There is usually a reason behind things like the typeface, colours, spacing, images, and layout. I’m learning how to think about the person looking at the design and what I want them to notice first.
School has also taught me that getting feedback is part of the process. Sometimes I really like something I made, and then someone points out a problem I didn’t notice. It can be frustrating at first, but going back and fixing it usually makes the final design better.
Graphic Design in Montreal
Right now, I’m most interested in branding, typography, print design, and web design.
I like branding because I enjoy creating visuals that represent a company or idea. I also enjoy typography because small changes in spacing, size, and typeface can completely change how a design feels.
Print design is interesting to me because I like seeing my work as a physical piece, whether it’s a poster, brochure, or sticker. Web design is different because I have to think about how people will use the site. It needs to look good, but it also needs to be easy to understand and navigate.
These areas give me different ways to experiment and improve my design skills.
Montreal Graphic Design
As a Montreal Graphic Design student, I want to learn more about the local design scene. There are a lot of different businesses, studios, schools, and creative people around Montreal, so there is always something interesting to look at.
As a Graphic and Web Design student in Montreal, I want to learn more about the kind of work designers are doing here. I’m interested in seeing how local businesses use branding, websites, posters, social media, and other types of design to communicate with people.
My Goals
Right now, my main goal is to get better at design and build a portfolio that I’m actually proud of. I want my portfolio to show more than just finished images. The different projects should also show how I approach design problems.
After college, I would like to continue working in Montreal Graphic Design and gain more experience in the industry. I’m not completely sure what my career will look like yet, and I don’t think I need to have everything figured out right now. I want to keep trying different areas and see what I enjoy doing the most.
Looking Ahead
As I get closer to finishing the program, I want to start getting some real experience outside of school. I’ll be looking for a stage opportunity in Winter 2028 where I can work with other designers and see what working in the industry is actually like.
I want to take what I’ve learned in class and use it on real projects. Working with other designers would also help me learn how to deal with deadlines, feedback, clients, and revisions.
My Graphic Design Work
Most of the work on this website comes from projects I’ve done while studying Montreal Graphic Design at John Abbott College. I’ve worked on both print and web projects, so my portfolio has a mix of different types of work.
I’m going to keep updating this portfolio as I complete more projects and learn new skills. You can check out my Web Portfolio and Print Portfolio to see some of the work I’ve created so far.
Let’s Work Together
If you’re interested in my work, have a project you’d like to talk about, or know about a design opportunity, feel free to contact me. I’m always interested in meeting new people, getting feedback, and learning more about the design industry.
